Is it proper etiquette to ask for money on a wedding invitation? Recently received an invitation from a couple at our church. It had a P.S. at the bottom stating: "Monetary expressions will be appreciated". Both of them had been married before. Would a $100 gift certificate to a nice restaurant be an appropriate gift.? |

In poor taste. Many advice columnists have answered this exact question and the answer is always the same: no, no, no! There really is no proper way for the couple to ask for money. If they wanted money for the wedding the only way to get that across was to have a family member or friend mention it to guests and have the word spread around on it's own, all the while the guests would have no clue that the couple orchestrated it. Another tactic would have been to not register anywhere. Guests, not knowing what else to get probably would have given money instead. That being said, I think a guest should have the right to buy whatever they can afford and whatever they deem appropriate, Yes, registries are a great way to give clueless guests an idea of what the couple likes, but they kind of seem like the recipient is forcing your hand on what to buy. A $100 gift card is more than generous, considering it is a second marriage for both. If it were me, they would be lucky to get $50.
